I need a website designed, a hosting service and a domain registration, how much does this cost?

Can you recommend a company you have used in the past?

What can go wrong?

For hosting and a domain I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/

Powweb is on a 50% sale – $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.

Godaddy doesn’t offer a free domain, but you can get one for $2.19 if you’re buying hosting from them, plus they also have a 20% sale at the moment.

All of these hosts include web builder so you can design your site yourself, you can even install Wordpress (one click install through Fantastico) and just simply choose a theme which you like.

I have a business project that will require the skills of someone proficient in building a good website. I want to offer them a % of monies rather than a fee to build it. Any ideas, as freecycle does not seem to allow this?

I need to create a website that I’ll be using for a guild. Everything I’ve tried so far has been complicated, even with some good background knowledge of using HTML.

Does anyone know of a website designer that shows you the HTML/CSS code for it after you create it?

This is an easy enough free website: http://www.freewebsitetemplates.com/

If you were a small/medium sized business owner and you needed a website, what would you look for in any website developer which you come across to decide if they is/are the right one?

A varied portfolio — a few designers’ portfolios I’ve checked out have shown different sites that all look more or less the same. If I’m spending more than $40 for a template download, I want a commensurate level of attention paid to the project.

Not underpriced. No free samples, which believe it or not I’ve actually been offered. Makes me wonder how much their time is really worth if they’re willing to give it away.

I don’t care one way or another if they work out of their home or a commercial space.

A questionnaire provided to me to fill out stating the site’s goals, basic features I require like product descriptions and pricing, wishlist features, whether I will provide artwork or if I need you to create new images, etc. Then once you have an idea of what I’m shooting for, you can break down estimated fees and time required.

A realistic schedule laid out, and firm deadlines for the different stages of development. A point of conflict I’ve noticed between designers and clients is different expectations of how long a project like this takes.

Basically I’d want to know they have their financial and creative house in order before proceeding. A professional who laid out their own expectations and their expectations of me would win me over. If someone walked through my door and asked for a flat rate for a small site without really talking with me about it, I’d think they were total novices and that they’d be using me to learn on.

I recently got dreamweaver 8 and am thinking to make websites for people as a side job. I was wondering, what does a website designer usually charge per job? or what is an annual estimate on salary? how long does it usually take for a single job?

It totally depends on what route you go down for website design and development. Whether it be databases, php security, general design and development or graphics. Usually a designer can charge between $200 and $2,000 per website, so as you can see – a massive range!

Again, a single job just depends. I have been designing websites for about 6 years now and for the first 3 years it took about a week of designing per site – with 2 hours a day. Now I can make a site within 5 hours. So you will speed up,

For a website with just 6 – 12 pages I would say you could charge between $200 & $400 per site. Depending on your quality of coding and design.

Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck and if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to send me a message,

Best Wishes,
Ed Johnson

Hi,
If I need an ecommerce website what should be the going market rate I should pay the web developer?
I guess I want to know what is too high….
I would like to know the average Hourly rate.

You should pay as little as you can. The average hourly rate depends on where you look for help. Without a clear understanding of what you want (that is, a specification / request for proposal), a price cannot be offered.

Most mediocre Web designers charge in the $50 per hour range. Hire a mediocre contractor, get a mediocre result.

When dealing with contractors, there’s a simple rule: Cheap, fast, good. Pick two.

In other words, if you don’t want to spend much, your project will either take forever or be of low quality. If you are willing to spend lots of money, your project can be done quickly and well.

That said, were I you I would be looking for someone to install and skin a copy of Zen Cart for me, and my budget would be $3,000 if I want to let it take some time, $5,000 if I want it done quickly.

I am a graphic designer, and I do know how to create web graphics. I would like to learn how to creat websites. What programs would you recommend I learn? I have looked into classes in Dreamweaver, or Microsoft Frontpage. Are either of these good programs to use? I would also like to learn some HTML. I took basic programming classes in college, and found I had a knack for programming, so HTML might be a good thing to learn. Any suggestions on other programs? I do know how to use Photoshop to create web graphics.

Adobe products such as Photoshop and Fireworks CS3 are fantasic tools for graphic design. Remember it’s about creativity.

Web design (grahpics and html) is best learned using Notepad… or programs like WYSIWYG.

I think you also need to familarize yourself with CSS — I do believe.

Others might have better advice for you tho.

For example, what process do you believe the designer went through to create a website like this:
http://www.kindergallery.com.au/

Thank you

There isn’t really a process, I just get a design idea in my head then set out to make that design as best as i can with my knowledge. The client who propose the website to a designer probably just sent a vague description on what they wanted and the designer sent them a template then they suggested improvements and then he changed it and repeated this process until a website was agreed on. However 1 thing I’ve noticed is the designer isn’t very good and there better be alternative content on that website, because the designer has used Flash the website can’t be viewed on phones, so lets hope he built some alternative content to.

I tried Tripod but the pictures never load properly for me. I need a free website that has an easy to use website builder to make a personal website for friends and family. Which one do you think is the best? I have a Myspace and Photosite already.

www.freewebs.com

and

www.moonfruit.com

They are both easy to use free website designers.

Someone who designs, builds, develop and make sure that a website is completely up and running without problems, can he or she also be called a website engineer?

If you are doing it ALL, you are more into the developer part.

You can call me anything you want, just don’t call me late for dinner.
