with the proper use of cookies, you can do the whole cart in js… but for checkout you need to use a payment engine and a way to tell you who ordered what.

so the answer is yes and no.

Let me alter your question a bit before I answer…

Can you design a SUCCESSFUL eCommerce website entirely using JavaScript?

No.

Let’s use a brick-and-mortar comparison. Imagine you were in a mall, in the food court which is full of people. You want to order a pizza from the other side of the court… only the sales clerk wants you to shout out your credit card number from across the court… several people seated at the tables take an interest and have their notepads and pencils ready. What do you do?

That’s what JavaScript is like. All the program code for your "solution" is completely visible to anyone who wants to take an interest. Yes, in theory, you could get a digital signature from Thawte or VeriSign so that only the CUSTOMER can see the code… but if you’re already spending hundreds of dollars for the signature, why not get a web host that has a real eCommerce solution while you’re at it?

Many web hosting companies have a program in their control panel called Fantastico, which will install a whole online store called osCommerce for you with just a few mouse clicks.

I’m moving up in my html and going to attempt a small ecommerce site.

Are there any good templates out there?
I know there are tons of people selling templates on ebay and Ive come across one called VIP Cart. Anyone heard of that?

I’m just looking for a basic skeleton ecommerce template and would like to be pointed in the right direction.

Thanks

use OSCommerce opensource

The short answer is no, not one that works properly.

Edit: Robi, you need a way to store the orders for fulfillment. That means sending an e-mail or saving to a database. You can’t do either with JavaScript. If you don’t know what you are talking about, please don’t answer.

So I set up one using yahoo but It turns out it is only for Americans well I need one for Canada. Looking for the same website idea something that will offer me a web store for a flat rate a month. The only thing that I need for sure is that it will be compatible with paypal and that I can set up shipping within canada even if it as a flat rate shipping where I can type in my own rates that is fine.

Thanks
Steve

I use and recommend:
http://www.hostmonsterplus.com

They have unlimited transfer and space.
They give you a free domain for life.
They support php and mysql if you ever use those.
You can also add as many domains (.com, .net, …) as you like so you can have many different sites for 1 hosting price, so you can expand and have different businesses on 1 account.
They also give you free $50 Google Credits for advertising your site.
I’ve tied paypal into my sites successfully.

If you go with them and have any trouble making your site feel free to PM me, I have a lot of experience there.

Whatever you choose, the best luck to you.
