Basically I have a interview in which I want to take a physical portfolio. This worked well showcasing my Front-end abilities. However, I wanted tips on how I can show my work in action, code, should I describe how code works, and if I should, how should I do it.

When I’m looking for employees I always look for the small things, like organised code, tabbed in the correct places, so that at a glance you can see what goes with what e.g.

Also I look for people who comment their code, so no-one has to look through all the code to find out what it does.

If you are going to an interview, I wouldn’t suggest talking about how code works, as they will know and this will sound patronising to them.

Most people aren’t looking for people who can code, there are thousands, what they are usually looking for is someone who has flare, creativity and can think for themselves, but also work in a team.

Thanks for your answer – I’m not sure where/how to reply! As part of a masters degree I am studying for, I am learning a lot more about:

- PHP 5 – specifically Object Oriented Design, Design Patterns and best practices.
- Interaction Design, User Experience
- Learning Objects – reuse of/sharing of/metadata etc etc.

I work predominantly with non-technical people, and the more I learn the more I really need to make contact with other web developers with experience of any of the above, not so I can ask for help, but just to make contact with people who ‘speak my language’!

I plan to use a photoshop designed animation on with my website rotating photos of my best selling products. The question is if I have alt text for each image will the search engines read each alt text on all the pictures in the animation (about 6 images) or does the animation count as one image and only one alt text is read. Trying to increase my keyword count for ranking.

Only one is counted since it is an animated images.

If you want SE index both 6 images, separate theme then you javascript to animate those images

For a website that will have about 4-5 pages, some graphics, nothing fancy, just pretty basic.

That depends on what your website will be and what you want it to look like… Flash costs more than simple HTML, how many pages, what type of ‘functions’ do you want. All of this has to be taken into consideration. Also, will you want ongoing support for updates and bugs? This will cost as well, either a flat monthly or hourly rate. It will also depend on whether you ask an individual to do it on their own or if you contact a large company to assist. More details please!

If you needed a website designed or made, would you trust a free lance web developer to do it or would you find a established company to do it?

What about if the free lance developer offered cheaper prices?

If you wouldn’t normaly let a free lance developer do your job, answer this.
If an established company charges $1000 dollars for this project, whats the highest price you would pay for a free lane developer to do the same job?

I’d expect a freelancer to offer much cheaper prices. I’d want to see at least 10 websites he’s designed, and I’d confirm that he actually designed them, that is, that he hadn’t just copied URLs from some sites on the web and tried to pass them off as his own.

The highest price I’d pay would depend on what I wanted from the website, and the relative skill of the developer. It would be up for negotiation.

Because the browser doesn’t handle links the same way on the computer as it does on the web ( "/" as opposed to "\" and directory relative urls), I have to upload everything in order to test it or I have to change all my links after I finish testing in order to upload the site. What environment do you test in that will make this process easier?
